| A storm trysail should be considerably by smaller than a double-refed mainsail.Its area should be about 5 percent of the square of the length of the unreefed mainsail luff. |
Example;
1.Boat's mainsail luff(unreefed) is 36 feet(11 meters) tall
2.Trysail area in suqare feet = 36 x 36 = 1.296 x 1,296 = 64 suqare feet.Round up to 65 square fee
3.Trysail area in square in square meters 11 x 11 = 121 x 0.05 = 6.05 square meters.Round down to 6 square meters. |

The recomended area for a spitfire jib or storm staysail on a long keeled traditional crusing yacth is 2,5 percent of the heigth of the foretriangel.
To maintain proper helm balance in heavy winds more modern yacts whose cuteaway forefeet encourage the bow to blow leeward need either a smaller storm staysail or one carried farther aft on its own stay |
